How can I get into Fitness modelling?

I'm wondering how to get into fitness modelling. Is it best to find an agency or can I go direct to supplement companies/fitness or sports wear companies?

Hi Angela,

If you were to get in the appropriate condition (I have no pictures of you, so have no way of knowing your present condition), and compete in a reasonably prominent show and place in the top 3 or so and if you have a good "look" - you look "marketable" - your pictures would probably appear in one or more of the magazines.

However, doing this takes a great deal of hard work, sacrifice and good genetics.

If you wanted to be a spokesmodel for a company, your conditioning wouldn't have to be up to quite as high a standard but your physical attractiveness would play a larger part. The bottom line is that the better package you present to a company, the better contract you could expect.

Keep in mind that unless you can put all of these together and have all of these attributes, you shouldn't expect to make a lot of money as a fitness model. The vast majority have full-time jobs or other means to take care of their finances (husbands, etc). So unless you have the physique, looks, potential and drive to be the best the chances are that this profession won't be all that profitable unless you can crack the top 5 or 10 in the world and get a contract with a big supplement company or other big industry company.

Thank you for your response, Mark. I competed in my first bikini comp on 28 august. I placed third but the feedback I got was that I'm too lean in my midsection. Although I take that on board, my lean mid section is one of my favourite body parts and I've decided that instead of conforming to a stereo typical 'look' I'm going to continue my clean diet and exercise regime and see if I can get some modelling work. To be honest, it's not about the 'career' or the money, but more about a goal. I work so hard at the gym and I feel without a vision it'd be easy to burn out.
Many thanks for your advise.

I am a fitness and underwear model and I started just by getting my face out there, if you haven't already go to www.modelmayhem.com and get some pics up loaded and photographers will contact you and arrange shoots, most of my work comes from referrals of photographers,
I'm on there on www.modelmayhem.com/hirdy so add me or give me a shout if you have any questions

Hi Angela

Having seen your picture, my honest opinion is that you have the looks but you have the abs of a fitness model but not the musculature

On the other hand you don't have the extreme curves of a bikini competitor - although if you did increase your body fat somewhat, you may get the "bikini" look. So you're kind of "in-between" categories.

To move to fitness, you actually have to put on more muscle than most people realize and you would have to put together a very athletic / acrobatic routine, which requires time and a huge amount of dedication. Also, most people don't realize that often the fitness girls have to use moderate dosages of anabolic steroids and I hope I don't have to warn you against the irreversible effect of these drugs in women!!

I think if I were in your shoes, I also wouldn't want to conform to the arbitrary image of a bikini or fitness model. If you stick to your guns, keep doing some competitions (different judges apply different standards) and go to fitness / bodybuiding shows (like BodyPower in the UK) and network with all the people you can, you'll probably get taken on board by a company...but again, don't expect riches but you may get free supplements, recognition, free photoshoots, travel, etc?

Thank you Mark. I do feel that I'm 'in-between' so thanks for that bit of direction. I will definitely persevere with my training and try get my face out there a bit more. I joined the ukbff for a year and can't compete with any other federation until that year is up, so will keep training and try with another federation next year.
